“The island of Maafushi has gone through a rough period of accelerated erosion and the nation's future is under threat from anticipated global sea level rise, caused by global warming. Huge rocks line the harbour side of the island. To my left was Maafushi prison, which houses numerous political prisoners. As I stood on the rock barrier, I realised what a delicate balance this Maldive Island hangs in.” The Maldives, located in the Indian Ocean, is the world's lowest-lying country, with no part lying more than 2m above sea level and more than 80 percent of its scattered islands less than one meter above sea level. - aechachacha
