“I have been coming to New Delhi for years and I can still remember the first time I landed in 2010, the plane touched down in a dense, orange fog. The air smelled like burning leaves, and I remember naively thinking how romantic the city was, everything bathed in a thick, orange glow. At the time, I had no idea that the romantic "fog" as I called it, was pollution. Last week though, 6 years after my first trip, it was a different story when the plane landed and the busses drove us through the muddy orange smog. As the other passengers and I were herded towards the airport, people around me were gasping, comparing the city to a gas chamber and remarking that they had never seen anything like it. The pollution levels were off the charts, and for the first time in Delhi's history schools were closed to prevent young children from breathing the air, which was the equivalent of smoking 40 cigarettes per day. I gathered my bags, headed towards my taxi, and within minutes my eyes were burning from the air. The next day I woke up with my throat on fire and I could not believe what I was seeing as I photographed in the famous Lodi Gardens. Visibility was reduced to only a few hundred meters and the historical architecture was shrouded in haze. Since I've left, the government has taken steps to improve the situation but has announced little in the way of enforcing laws to prevent crop burning or banning firecrackers at religious functions, which contribute to a significant percentage of the deadly pollution choking Delhi.” - allisonsarahjoyce | November 3, 2016| #Gettyimagesnews #photographertakeover [1 of 6]
