## Caption

April’s full moon—which will reach peak illumination on the 23rd—is referred to as the “Pink Moon.” But where did this name come from? According to  farmersalmanac, “Pink Moon” has origins in Native American, European, and Colonial American sources.

Unfortunately, the moon won’t actually be pink this month. The name most likely draws its origin from the early springtime bloom of moss phlox (a wildflower native to eastern North America), which also goes by the name “moss pink.”

April’s full moon also goes by other names: “Moon When the Streams Are Again Navigable” (Dakota), “Breaking Ice Moon” (Algonquin), “Moon of the Red Grass Appearing” (Oglala), “Budding Moon of Plants and Shrubs” (Tlingit), “Moon When the Geese Lay Eggs” (Dakota), “Moon When the Ducks Come Back” (Lakota), “Frog Moon” (Cree), and “Sucker Moon” (Anishinaabe)
