Now you can create “drone” shots from your phone footage 🤳collab with justinlv // AI software nerfstudioteam

‣ How it’s made
First justinlv slowly walked around me in a circle, capturing about 1 minute of phone footage.
Even though he never captured me directly from above, he was able to construct an entire scene using the AI software. Then we manually set the camera path - we were inspired by FPV drone pilots, so we tried to make the camera path as drone-like as we could.

‣ Limitations
While it’s not perfect (the quality in some parts of the scene could be higher) it definitely impressed me. You might have also noticed the part where the beach starts disintegrating - this is because we didn’t scan the whole beach. I thought it’d be interesting to leave this part in so you can see how NeRF handles parts where it doesn’t have complete information.

I’ve shared some more BTS clips and the input footage on twitter (same username there)

‣ Software
Earlier this year I shared a few NeRFs using different software, Instant-NGP. While Instant-NGP does a great job of the close-up details, it can struggle with larger scenes, resulting in floating artifacts. These can be really artistic and beautiful, but sometimes you just want a clean shot.

We recently discovered NeRF Studio (new software that just came out), which handles large unbounded scenes really well, making it ideal for simulating drone shots. It also has some really helpful UI for setting camera paths.

To learn how to use NeRF studio, go to docs.nerf.studio
(Currently this does require some coding knowledge and a decent graphics card)

‣ iPhone App?
There’s no easy one-button iPhone app for this *yet* but this is coming soon. One company I’m keeping my eye on is Luma AI. They are developing an iPhone app for NeRFs. I got to try an early beta of this, and while the results do not look as good as what we’re getting on desktop, it’s promising tech. Whichever app can nail the NeRF mobile experience first I suspect will become very popular
