George Marion Johnson was an American lawyer and Howard University professor who was the first vice-chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
 
Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico Johnson graduated from UC Berkeley with an A.B., law degree and LLD.  He returned to UC Berkeley in 1938 to obtain a J.S.D., a doctorate in law degree and became one of the first African Americans in the nation to hold this advanced degree.
 
He had a legal career as a tax attorney and was the first African American hired as California State Assistant Tax Counsel. Johnson was recruited as a law professor at #HowardUniversity where he taught Contracts, Equity and Personal Property courses.

He served as acting General Counsel for the Fair Employment Practices Committee (FEPC) established to monitor President Franklin Roosevelt’s Executive Order 8802, which banned discrimination in U.S. defense plants.

Johnson was named Dean of the HowardU Law School (#HUSL). While there, he introduced the first tax law courses and established the Howard Law Review Journal.

Johnson also assisted the NAACP legal team led by former Howard University Law School Dean Charles Hamilton Houston in writing civil rights briefs for major civil rights cases. He and the Commission investigated black voter exclusion from Louisiana elections.

Other Highlights and Honors:
- Johnson helped establish the University of Nigeria in the year of its independence from Great Britain (1960) 
- Named first Vice-Chancellor (University President) of the University of Nigeria by Nigerian President Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe (1960 -1964)
- Served as Professor of Education at Michigan State University from (1968-1973)
- Authored a book on Education Law (1969)
- Authored a textbook, Michigan Education Law (1970)
- Professor of Law at the University of Hawaii (1974) 
- Director of the Preadmission program - ensured minorities succeeded in law school (1974)

He died in Honolulu in 1987 at the age of 89.
