Are our politicians up to their old tricks (again)?
 
On the verge of the 2024 London Mayoral elections, longstanding questions over voter fraud have again been thrust firmly back into the spotlight, with research suggesting that two-fifths of Britons have election rigging concerns.
 
Here in our nation’s capital, citizens have recent experience of voter fraud and its far reaching impacts, with a mayor in East London being kicked out of office in a scandal over postal votes in Tower Hamlets.
 
Even the Electoral Commission, which regulates our elections, has admitted that police data "may not be a complete record of all activity which could involve electoral fraud offences".
 
It’s little wonder that 58% of Londoners didn’t vote in the last Mayoral election. Because the truth is this: if almost half of voters don’t believe the process is democratic, then it is flawed.
 
And, as the biggest beneficiaries of the easy-to-corrupt postal vote system, the mainstream political parties collude to support the status quo, keeping our democratic machinery mired in the past and allowing two-party domination to endure.
 
As an advocate for cryptocurrency, blockchain and web3 technologies, I have a solution: using blockchain-enabled elections to ensure transparency, prevent voter fraud and even support online voting.
 
By moving our elections on to immutable blockchain ledgers, I believe that we can re-engage a disenchanted electorate while at the same time protecting our democracy from malicious actors and the self-interests of the political elite.
 
It’s time that we demand our politicians and their accomplices at the Electoral Commission embrace blockchain-enabled elections ahead of the London Mayor vote to prevent fraud and promote the very concept of “Of the people, by the people, for the people”.
