UC Berkeley alumna Andrea Prichett helped organize the South African apartheid encampment with the Campaign Against Apartheid in 1985. Prichett and her peers at the encampment pushed for full and immediate divestment, particularly surrounding the UC Regents’ investments.

“The main similarity (between the encampments) is that the call for divestment is fundamentally a reformist demand,” Prichett said. “It’s a way into the broader struggle. It’s a way of personalizing our responsibility to oppressed people because we are each responsible. We’re each supporting a university that is supporting an apartheid settler-colonial state.”
