“I run because it makes me feel good about myself…even on the hardest runs I always feel accomplished when the run is over.”

Meet Martina Grant👋 an NYRR member and volunteer who started running in the summer of 2010 to get fit. The following year she signed up for her first half marathon and has been involved with the NYRR community ever since.

“The feeling of accomplishment was wonderful and sharing this feeling with thousands of other women was extremely inspiring.” 💗

After that experience she signed up for more NYRR races and then decided to join NYRR Group Training to improve her running. Martina said that through Group Training she was able to connect with other runners who all shared her interest in running and bettering themselves.

“I was even more motivated when the program came closer to home in Astoria Park with coaches and fellow participants who lived in my community.”

In 2019, Martina started attending Open Run sessions in Crocheron Park, which she said was “life changing” and the experience encouraged her to become a volunteer captain at the park.

“I love Saturday mornings, meeting at our park, and I can truly say that some of my fellow volunteer captains are like family to me, my running sisters.” 👯‍♀️

Currently, Martina is a Member Plus member because she said she understands the impact that NYRR has on the NYC community.

“I think what I have learned the most from running and volunteering is that everyone is on their own journey – when we meet people whether it is through running, volunteering or life, we do not know what part of the journey they are on – they could be beginners, more experienced or dealing with injuries but we need to be accepting and understanding of people for where they are at.”

As we close out #GlobalVolunteerMonth, let’s show Martina some 🫶 in the comments for her dedication to supporting the NYRR community and learn more about how you can become an NYRR member at the link in bio.✍️
