#TBT Is this pancake box familiar to you? 🥞

Well, if it’s not, that’s prob because the Pearl Milling Company just arrived on store shelves in June with a faint reminder of ….

You guessed it — Aunt Jemima. The name and the character’s image were removed from all its famous breakfast products in the effort toward racial equality this year.

“Aunt Jemima’s origins are based on a racial stereotype,” said the company representatives.

📢 FUN (or not so fun) FACT: The brand’s name and image were inspired by “Old Aunt Jemima,” a song and subservient mammy character popularized in minstrel shows during late 1800s. Though the character’s look evolved over time, the brand, founded in 1925, decided that it could not escape its racist past.

🖐 Do you think rebranding the pancake box 🥞 was the right move❓ Share in the comments.

Then SWIPE ==>> to hear more about it from the iconic ‘90s show “A Different World.”

What do our majors umartgalleries / uofmiamienglish / umiamihistoryclub / umiamiubs think of the shift?
