Italian Para archer Paola Fantato competed at the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 1996. 

Para swimmer Natalie du Toit competed at the 2008 Olympic Games. She won five gold medals at the 2008 Paralympic Games.

Marla Runyan collected five Paralympic gold medals in her races at Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996. In 2000 she went on to compete at the Olympics in Sydney, becoming the first legally blind athlete to compete at an Olympic Games. 

Ilke Wyludda, a three-time Olympian, won gold in the women’s discus throw at Atlanta 1996 and became a Paralympian in 2012. 

Pepo Puch represented Croatia at the 2004 Olympic Games and switched to Para sport after an accident left him with incomplete paraplegia. Puch made his Paralympic debut at London 2012 where he won a gold and bronze for his birth country Austria.

Zahra Nemati also embraced flagbearing duties when she was selected for the role at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The Para archer also carried Iran’s flag at the Opening Ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, where she won her third consecutive gold medal.

Sandra Paovic competed in table tennis at the 2008 Olympic Games, but had a serious accident the following year and switched to Para table tennis. She won Paralympic gold at Rio 2016.

Six-time Paralympic champion Natalia Partyka competed in table tennis at both Games for four consecutive editions, starting with Beijing 2008.

Hungary’s Pal Szekeres is the first athlete to win medals at both the Olympic and Paralympic Games. A bronze medallist in the team foil event at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games, Szekeres switched to wheelchair fencing after he was injured in an accident in 1991 and went on to win three gold and three bronze medals across five Paralympics. 

Italy’s Assunta Legnante is always sure to put on a show on the athletics field. The 2008 Olympic shot putter switched to Para competitions after her vision deteriorated. She became a double Paralympic gold medallist from London 2012 and Rio 2016.
