'Tumbling Into Landscape' is a captivating long-term installation in our 'Seeing America' galleries. It showcases Saya Woolfalk’s remarkable life-sized collage 'Self Portrait (Words by Sojourner Truth),' accompanied by six #HudsonRiverSchool landscape paintings from the Museum's collection.

Woolfalk's self-portrait is meticulously crafted using digital fragments from the surrounding landscapes. Through this site-specific artwork, she invites viewers to immerse themselves in the breathtaking scenes that grace the Northeastern US, while also encouraging contemplation on how the American landscape has been romanticized in art.

As an artist of Japanese and African-American heritage, Woolfalk highlights the historical absence of Native Americans and enslaved African-Americans in traditional landscape paintings. She prompts us to reflect on how these paintings have influenced perceptions of national identity and belonging.

SayaWoolfalkstudio is a contemporary artist that uses science fiction and fantasy to explore and examine multiple dimensions in her work.

'Tumbling into Landscape' was installed in conjunction with Woolfalk’s solo exhibition 'Saya Woolfalk Fieldnotes from the Empathic Universe' (2021-22). #AAPIHeritageMonth
