Today, we remember Frank Stella. 🖤🤍

The second artist of the #BMWArtCar series, Frank Stella inspired generations of artists including Julie Mehretu, BMW’s newest addition to the #ArtCar fleet.

In 1976, Frank was asked to create BMW #ArtCar2 after the huge success of the first rolling sculpture by Alexander Calder. The BMW Art Car experience had a significant impact on Stella. Before the collaboration, Frank did not have a driver’s license; after, he was so passionate about motorsports and inspired by the racing community he started racing himself.

Stella sought inspiration from his technical fascination of the racing coupe. The final result was a machine wrapped in a graph paper pattern, capturing and defining every curve and indentation. The choice of black and white was also intentional, designed to visually set it apart from the bulk of color of the other cars on the race track.

“My design is like a blueprint transferred to the bodywork.” - Frank Stella
