Sint Maarten is widely recognized as *the* planespotting island where giant aircrafts fly over awestruck sunbathers. Sound familiar? However, what most people don’t know about the Dutch territory is that it is actually known as “The Friendly Island,” where travelers can pack their days with thrilling adventures (like riding the world’s steepest zipline) or enjoying the serene turquoise blue beaches. Whichever itinerary you choose, you’ll be welcomed, and most likely offered guavaberry liqueur, by a friendly local.⁠

The mountain-meets-sea destination is also home to a parrot sanctuary, the longest Carnival celebration in the Caribbean, and the thriving capital city of Philipsburg. And don’t get us started on the cuisine. You could easily spend the entire time eating local delicacies like johnnycakes (cornmeal pancakes) and lokri (a simmered rice dish resembling paella), but a trip to Sint Maarten isn’t complete without visiting the no-frills Captain’s Rib Shack for glorious sweet and jerky spareribs. And whatever you do, be sure not to pack your bags for home without a bottle of the island’s specialty Guavaberry rum.⁠
