This is Samir Mansour bookshop, but let me tell you what it means to me. When I was a kid my dream like any child’s dream was to travel the world, but since I was born in Gaza that dream felt impossible. I started reading novels, short stories, books, and I imagined myself travelling through those books. This bookshop changed my life, I used to go there every month with my mother and buy few books and wait so eagerly for the next month so my mum can buy me more. And for me that felt like another ticket to another country. I used to go there and stay for hours browsing which books would be my new companions, and the staff there knew me so well. They would welcome me with so much love and I would sit upstairs reading before my mum comes to pick me up. In my room in Gaza, I still have hundreds of books that I passionately stayed up till 5 in the morning reading. I remember one night my parents came running to my room at 4 am because they heard me crying out loud, I thought I was the only one awake, I was reading a lengthy novel that I stayed up late on a school night to finish. I remember the relieved laughter of my parents when they realised I was crying because of the novel and that nothing horrible has happened. They mocked me and told the story to all our family members and my friends. Those books changed my life and changed many lives of Palestinians in Gaza. This bookshop and those books were the only escape from our reality. I read foreign novels, history books, Mahmoud Darwish poems, love stories and met some of my best friends through discussing and exchanging those books. This bookshop gave me hopes, dreams, new friends, amazing memories, and a new life. One of the first things I intended to visit when I go back to Gaza was this beautiful place, but yesterday Israeli bombs removed it from existence as if they admit that our books, our hopes and dreams are threatening. And all my friends are also hurting and crying because every single one of them had another story, another imaginary life with this place. PS: the title of the book in the first picture means city of the strongest
