When I was a kid, the most important holiday for us was Eid, Me and my brother used to get so excited that we won’t sleep at night, we would hug our new clothes and sleep next to them, we would spend the whole night preparing plans for the next few days of Eid, to have a sleepover with my cousins, then to go and get عيدية (gifts) from our older family members, we would go out with our friends and eat out specifically shawarma and I would be so happy because I’m surrounded with all my family and friends. Then in the next few days we used to go to visit my mother’s side of the family in Rafah, for a Gazan going to Rafah is like travelling to another country. I have so many precious memories of us, when I look back it really breaks my heart thinking of all those memories. I haven’t celebrated Eid with my family for 5 years, ultimately I hate holidays now, for me I stopped celebrating Eid since I left Gaza, I never bought new clothes just for Eid, I haven’t hugged my family and kissed them in the morning since I left .. I remember me and my brother would be so sleepy because we stayed up the whole night laughing. I really thought this Eid would be different and I would get to see my family and start celebrating Eid again, but instead I have been staying up all night worrying about them, texting my brother instead of us laughing till dawn. Now he’s trying to comfort me and let me know that they will be okay. I didn’t buy Eid clothes and I won’t be celebrating when my people are getting killed, where my childhood is just a sweet memory that I don’t believe I had it sometimes, where Palestinian children are in the hospital instead of the candy shops, where mothers are weeping their murdered sons, where Al Aqsa is on fire, where bombs are replacing fireworks. As a Palestinian, I will be spending Eid crying and calling my loved ones, praying that they will be okay and holding into those sweet memories of my childhood in Gaza. Just imagine if this was your past, your reality and present.
