Inspired by three historic masks in the Metropolitan Museum's African collection, Fernandes scanned three materials—gold, textiles, and a combination of wood and shells—to create the digital layers of these newly imagined masks. Souvenir extends the artist’s investigation of authenticity, appropriation, and West African masquerade into the newest arena in which popular culture is being created and consumed.⁠
