What are our expectations for this girl? Who constructed them? Are they attainable?” –Van Hoang  ⁠

Van Hoang’s monumental triptych, After Angela, explores the legacy of Angela Davis. As a writer, scholar, feminist, socialist, and civil rights leader, Davis embodies both the desire for revolution and the ongoing struggle for equality. While the title suggests that the work was painted in homage to Davis, it is not a portrait. The figure here is building from the work of her ancestors and she glows with an otherworldly power as a force of nature and a contemporary icon.   ⁠
