#TikTokNotes is out. It's a new app from TikTok that is meant for sharing photos + text. Kinda sorta like that Instagram used to be like? It's currently only being tested in Canada and Australia. I downloaded it and checked it out today.

➡️ You can download it for iOS/Android here: https://notes.tiktok.com

• I was able to login without a password as it detected I was already logged in with TikTok.

• The interface is fairly similar to TikTok, though more limited.

• The settings page has very limited settings.

• The home feed can be algorithm or only accounts you follow.

• You can include up to 35 photos in a post, which is able to have a title + up to 4000 characters under it.

• Posts support hashtags properly. Hashtag content is not chronological, and you can't specify top/recent.

I did find one big issue.

I uploaded some photos of the Calgary Tower. Whatever optimization to compress the images TikTok Notes is using can really fuck up your photos.

Here's an example of what I mean.

A screenshot of the image in my Google Photos app, it looks fine.

A screenshot of the image in the TikTok Notes app. You can see weird halos around the top of the tower. Also, it crops the image in a bit.

Screenshot of the image in TikTok Notes website. It's still a little cropped but the weird halo effect isn't there. Also, the link opens fullscreen on desktop, which is not great.

I love the idea of more competition in the photo app space but I can't see myself using this if they compress images to the point of it being so noticeable. That in itself will probably prevent most serious photographers from using it. This is brand new though, and in testing, so I'd hope they can work on and improve that.
I'd love to see more refinement on searching and hashtags as well, so I can find other photographers I like.

So far so good but definitely needs some polish.
