Have you ever heard of Puʻuloa? This is a sacred site of the Kalapana people of Hawai’i, which has over 23,000 petroglyph images carved into the ground.

The center of Puʻuloa is a volcanic pressure dome surrounded by fields of pāhoehoe lava bedrock. The petroglyphs found in this location are interpreted to have many different meanings, all of which would have been greatly important to the Kalapana people. From recordings of travel, boundary markings, and trail guides to a record of events past and present, these rocks are a window into the lives of ancient Hawai’ians.
