You've likely come across those memes that playfully poke fun at yoga. How many times have you heard the suggestion, "Have you tried yoga for your migraine attacks?" Yes, it may seem like an obnoxious suggestion at first glance.

Let's take a step back and reconsider why people often recommend yoga. Yoga is a mindfulness-based practice that research has shown to reduce stress, a known trigger for many living with migraine. It's not at all about the contorted poses; rather, it's about the mind-body connection that helps you recognize when anxiety is creeping in because you're starting to feel the onset of an attack. This awareness is crucial in understanding what steps to take next.

You can bring this awareness into your yoga practice by asking yourself two questions: "What's here now?" and "What's needed now?" For example, if a posture feels too difficult or too easy, asking these questions can help you adjust. Perhaps you've pushed yourself too far, leading to back pain, or maybe you're not feeling the full sensation of the movement, indicating a need to go deeper.

Ultimately, yoga teaches us to carry this mind-body awareness beyond the mat and into our daily lives—or in our case, into the awareness of living with migraine.

However, it's important to note that any mind-body awareness practice can be beneficial in reducing stress and anxiety. Yoga is just one of many options, we encourage you try others including meditation, tai chi, art therapy, and more. Check out our online Mindfulness Series for more evidence based practices.
