Coming off of a heartbreaking loss in their first appearance in the national semifinals, there was something special about the 2017-18 team right off the bat. .
.
Prior to the season’s start, Head Coach Gary Astalos said in an interview with Carly Costello that he believed that they had the leadership in place to win a national championship after naming the captains for that season. .

After the first few games of the season, it appeared to everyone else that there was something different that season.

The bitter end to the 2016-17 season left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth and the team was out to finish the season with a victory that September. The Bulldogs dropped only one contest, a 2-3 loss in November, but stayed perfect at home and won the GLCHL Regular Season and Playoff title in what would be known as perhaps the most magical season in program history. .

The Bulldogs came into the tournament hot, riding a 16 game win streak. They first took on the Stony Brook University Sea Wolves, the only team to best them all season. The Bulldogs made a statement in their first contest, shutting out the Sea Wolves 4-0. .

Next up was the defending National Champions, the University of Central Oklahoma, whom they beat by a score of 5-3. Next up was Lindenwood, who would fall 4-0 to the Bulldogs to send them to their first National Championship game in program history. .
.
The Bulldogs took on #5 Illinois in the championship game, a team who had upset #1 Minot State the night before in the semifinals. The Bulldogs, however, came out hot and put themselves up by one with less than a minute played in the contest. The Dawgs would lead 2-0 after one and then 5-1 after two and then put up three more goals en route to an 8-1 victory in for the team’s first national championship in program history. .
