It’s just about 24hrs from the end of our season and it’s taken me all of that time to be able to wrap my head around everything and compose this to you, our players, our Stags:

An Open Letter to My Stag Family

By no means was this the toughest day of my coaching career—everyone is safe, everyone remains healthy and I don’t take either of those things for granted in this day and age. It was, however, by far one of the most helpless and surreal days of my last 19 years in this job. While we all understand the necessity of the action and the severity of the threat, it is ok to mourn the loss of a season and feel sadness at the abrupt end of the time we are allowed to spend together.

Although everyone loves the game days; the crisp uniforms, anxious energy and potential for glory, its all the other things I’ve grown to love and will miss from this unique group. Your booming laughter from the back of the bus, your terribly off key singing and the skill in which you have found a way to tik tok (is that a verb?) in every space imaginable on the road is the stuff teams are made of. I have been in awe of your ability to be resilient in the face of a tough season and to find value in the hard work and the journey towards your goal. I have watched you go through joy, pain, nerves and euphoria in the short time we had this season. I still marvel at your ability to bounce off the walls one minute and be snuggled sleeping bodies crammed into every space possible as I scale the seats to the back of the bus.

The sadness in the silence that greeted us this morning is not my own, it is because we will not be able to help you fulfill your promise this year—your journey as a team will forever be a “what-if” that can never be answered.

Most of us never get a chance to know when our last practice, our last game, our last moment on the field surrounded by our teammates will be. Watching our practice yesterday, knowing it would be our last, listening to the laughter, the cheers, the heckling and the energy I am so happy that we were given the grace of goodbye and the ability to acknowledge and express the love we have for each other in person, shoulder to shoulder. #stagfam🦌
