We woke up at 2 am to gear up and start paddling by 3 am, ready for the 18-mile round trip canoe trip to Spirit Island, from the west shore of Maligne Lake.

We were a little nervous because an unforecasted, severe thunderstorm had just hit the area, and we didn’t want to get caught in another storm in the middle of a lake in a metal canoe. 

But the skies looked to be clearing up so we made the decision to push off, with little to no visibility on the water, and only the stars and our headlamps as light.

After a few miles in, we realized the best way to see was to turn off our headlights and let the stars guide way—It had been a while since I’d seen the stars and Milky Way so clearly and it was definitely a welcome sight. 

Soon, dawn began to creep up on us, revealing we were close to a destination we had dreamed of for years. And when we rounded the corner to reveal Spirit Island, we were amazed at how beautiful this place was. It was better than we had imagined and the best part: we had it all to ourselves.

We also got lucky with beautiful, calm weather that made the experience and photographs even better.

I used my Canon EOS R5 and RF15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM wide angle lens for most of the morning to capture the entire expanse of the glacier-carved mountains surrounding Spirit Island and Maligne Lake in all their glory. In my opinion, the RF15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM is one of the best wide-angle zoom lenses on the market and my go-to lens for traditional landscape images, so I knew it would produce fantastic results. 

It’s safe to say the memories and images will never be forgotten from Spirit Island, as I check off another bucket list destination in the Canadian Rockies. #canoncreator #canonusa
