In celebration of #InternationalDayOfFriendship we spoke to Leading Senior Constable Karen Patten, Inspector Kevin Coughlan and Commander Deb Robertson whose friendship started 40 years ago at the Victoria Police Academy. 

While their careers have taken them far and wide, the three have kept in touch over the years - celebrating each other's wins and offering support to each other in times of need. 

"Policing is a rewarding and often challenging occupation. It has been the friendships formed, the sharing of experiences and support from work colleagues over the years that has certainly contributed to my longevity in Victoria Police,” Karen said. 

This was a bond that endured despite the fact they never worked directly with each other after finishing at the academy, with their very different paths an excellent example of how you can choose your own adventure with a career in policing – and you might just make a new friend (or whole squad of friends) along the way. 

Deb’s advice for those thinking of a career change with Victoria Police? 

“Be clear about why you are joining and if it is to serve the community and help people, never forget that. 

Most times you are not aware of the difference you may be making in someone’s life but settle with the fact of the honourable reason you do what you do - it truly is a privilege to serve and make a positive difference in people's lives”.
