It’s snow time! ⛄
As our snowfields open for 2023, Search and Rescue’s Senior Constable Michael Littleford wants to remind us just how unpredictable snow environments can be. 
 
"There can be sunshine one minute then a whiteout... navigating and looking after yourself in those conditions is hard enough. Looking after someone else is an extra challenge." 
 
We all play a part in staying safe when travelling to and from the alps, so make sure you: 
🏂 Check road conditions regularly as they can change quickly traffic.vicroads.vic.gov.au 
🏂 Drive cautiously – keep two hands on the wheel, use gradual pressure on the accelerator to avoid wheel spin, brake gently and avoid unnecessary gear changes. 
🏂 Avoid braking when cornering and use a low gear when driving down the mountain. 
🏂 Use low beam lights at night. High beams do not work in high mist areas. 
🏂 If you can’t see, pull over, put on your hazard lights and keep your engine running. 
🏂 If you hit ice, remain calm and apply the brakes gently to slowly regain traction. 
🏂 Ensure the equipment you have is suitable for your needs. 
🏂 Match your activities to your abilities and fitness – don’t ski or ride on a slope that is beyond your ability, you will endanger yourself or other snow-goers. 
🏂 Never ski or bushwalk alone. Let someone know where you are travelling to and when you expect to return, before you go. 
 
Remember: it is a legal requirement to carry suitable wheel chains at all times during the snow season when entering an alpine resort area. They must be fitted when directed to do so or it is snow go.
