ICYMI: It’s not too often that companion bills get unanimous votes in both the state House and Senate, but that’s what happened with Senate Bill 50 and House Bill 447.

The bipartisan pieces of legislation extend the expiration of the Eviction Diversion Pilot Program from this year to July 1, 2025. The program aims to reduce the number of evictions of low-income tenants.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin signed the bills into law, and now renters in the cities of Danville, Hampton, Petersburg, and Richmond will continue to have leniency in some situations. For example, certain protections exist if someone doesn’t have quite enough money to meet their rental payment—especially if they recently lost their job or a medical crisis arose. The pilot program also aims to reduce family displacement, which sometimes results in children no longer attending the same school after eviction.
