“We challenged you to live more deeply in your hearts and in your minds. We did this in your classes, in conversations … at school Masses, on retreats and service opportunities,” President Fr. David Ciancimino, S.J., said during his homily at Saturday afternoon’s Baccalaureate Mass in honor of the Class of 2024. 

“We've challenged you to reach, and to think and live with greater depth … We have sought to model for you what it means to be a good person.”

Many members of the Class of 2024 – which will graduate in our 154th Commencement Ceremony on Thursday – participated in the Mass, held before hundreds at a packed St. Michael Church in downtown Buffalo. 

Following words of gratitude by Simon Gates ’24, seniors presented yellow roses to their mothers and other impactful females in their lives. 

The Canisius faculty, dressed in academic regalia, were honored with a lengthy ovation near the end of the service. 

Our chorus and guitar ensemble performed during the Mass, which saw seniors participate as readers, Eucharistic Ministers, crossbearer, candlebearers and House flag bearers and presenters of the gifts. 

Concelebrants of the Mass were Director of Campus Ministry Fr. Chuck Frederico, S.J.; Campus Minister Fr. Michael Corcoran, S.J. '76; Assistant to the President Fr. Richard Zanoni, S.J. and Assistant to the Principal Fr. Edward Durkin, S.J.

“Be at peace. You belong to God," Fr. Ciancimino said to the seniors in the closing of his homily. "Have courage. As God has sent Jesus, so Jesus sends you – into the world to do much good. And may God bless you always on your journey.”
