Join us for another #PCresearch takeover, this time on the West Coast with Maeve Plassche '23 of Clifton, N.J. See scenes from the Stanford archives on Center for Engaged Learning’s Instagram story (engageatpc) and provcollege. 

“Hello Friars! My name is Maeve Plassche ’23. I am a history and secondary education major and a political science minor. I am a recipient of the Veritas Undergraduate Research Award, which has allowed me the opportunity to travel to Stanford University’s Special Collection Library to complete my research. Stanford University’s Special Collections is home to the Dr. Huey P. Newton Records, which contains files covering the time period from 1968–1994, including letters, FBI Files, manuscripts, newspapers, etc. Dr. Alyssa Lopez of the Department of History and Classics is my adviser for my undergraduate history thesis.

My project focuses on the life and activism of Elaine Brown, who became the first and only woman to lead the Black Panther Party. By focusing on Brown’s early years in the party and her time as a leader, I will explore how she was able to advance from a rank-and-file member to chairperson and what this meant for the rest of the women in the party. During her time as leader, Elaine Brown was able to transform the party from a self-defense organization to a major operator within the political and social worlds. While at the at the archives, I hope to gain a more in-depth look at what life was like within the Black Panther Party and a better understanding of Brown and her time as chairperson.”
