As Providence College wraps up its celebration of 50 Years of Women, let's look back at this dance from PC_TDF's Fall Dance Concert. The piece was choreographed by Wendy Oliver, Ed.D., professor of dance and of women's and gender studies, who also serves as director of PC_DanceCompany, and it captured this pivotal era of change at PC. #WomenofPC50

Seven dance company members performed the 12-minute piece, inspired by archival photos from 1971-75, the first four years of women as undergraduates.

To get a better idea of life at the college during those years, Oliver studied the exhibit on 50 Years of Women at Phillips Memorial Library, as well as the Spring 2021 issue of Providence College Magazine. Archivist Michelle Chiles of Library_PC helped her access black and white photos from the early 1970s, including women moving into dorms, registering for classes, walking around campus, playing basketball, cheerleading, and socializing.

The photos, along with music from The Pointer Sisters, Carole King, and Aretha Franklin, became the storyline for the dance. Olivia Dailey ’24, Alexandra Delano ’25, Dea Ferguson ’22, Grace Heffernan ’22, Katie Kudla ’24, Grace McEvoy ’25, and Shaila Murthy ’23 were the dancers.
