When the gate opened and Bridwell Pro Rodeo bucking horse No Tail Dell lunged out into the arena, Jayco Roper was ready. He knew very little about the animal, gleaming intel from one video he had found online. All it showed was that the horse could be a "hopper."

Still, everything came together for an 87-point ride during the first performance of the Redding (Calif.) Rodeo, allowing Roper to get a much-needed victory.

Getting jostled around during the competition was certainly difficult for the veteran bareback rider. But it paled in comparison to the journey and stress of actually getting to the rodeo.

On May 15, Roper rode Beutler & Son Rodeo's Unleashed to an 86-point ride at the Santa Rosa Roundup in Vernon, Texas, picking up the victory. The euphoria of a win didn't last long as his flight from Texas to California continually got delayed.

"We literally had to call the stock contractor and tell him, 'Hold our horses as long as you can because we're going to be photo finishing.' And we dang sure did," Roper said.

Roper finally made it to California, ordered an Uber and asked to get from the airport to the Redding Rodeo Grounds as quickly as possible.

"We told the Uber driver, we'll give you $200 if you can haul butt. The speed limit was 70 – this guy was going 72 mph," Roper said with a laugh. "We barely, barely made it. He didn't get that $200 or a five-star review."

Even after having to tape up and put on gear during the drive, Roper was still able to pull it all together and collect himself for a standard-setting effort. His ride during the first performance easily carried throughout the three-day event, with Jaceklane Frost finishing second with an 85.5-point ride.

More importantly, the outcome was the latest in a string of success that has Roper on the comeback trail.

The Oktaha, Okla., cowboy came into the weekend sitting 30th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings, but thanks to the wins in Redding, Vernon and some money earned at the Advantage Dirt Bares and Broncs in Ellensburg, Wash., Roper has vaulted up the standings into 20th. All told, the three rodeos earned him $8,753 this weekend, with $5,993 coming from Redding.

While he's not in a qualifying spot for his second straight Wrangler National Finals Rodeo appearance yet, Roper is slowly putting himself in position to return to Las Vegas this December. And no delayed flight or light-footed Uber is going to keep him from trying to make that happen.

"I'm really happy. I'm not quite relieved yet. I've still got a lot of catching up to do, but I knew a hot streak was coming and I think we're on one right now," Roper said.

Other winners at the PRCA Playoff Series rodeo were all-around cowboy Brushton Minton ($4,755, tie-down roping and team roping); steer wrestler Eric Logan (10.3 seconds on two head); team ropers Jaxson Tucker/Jason Johe (11.2 seconds on two head); saddle bronc rider Zeke Thurston (87.5 points on Birdwell Pro Rodeos' Momma's Boy); tie-down roper Dan Williams (18.1 seconds on two head); barrel racer Miley Bravos (17.37 seconds); and bull riders Tristen Hutchings (86.5 points on Bridwell Pro Rodeos' Sea Smoke) and Chance Schott (86.5 points on Bridwell Pro Rodeos' Louisiana Lightning).
