Happy Mother's Day to those who have raised or are raising children. To those who have nurtured and cared for someone or something as if they were their own. And also, to those who have lost their mothers or do not have good relationships with them- I'm honoring the time that you were able to have with her, the empty space you may feel with her gone or the empty space in your life that a mother should have filled.

It takes something special to be a caretaker, to want another being to grow, be happy, learn and flourish. A mother wears MANY hats - provider, cook, disciplinarian, teacher, friend, chauffeur...the list goes on! 

My grandmother was one of the greatest superheroines I’ve ever known - strong willed, tough, never afraid to speak her mind, fluent in Chinese and English, scored the winning shot in a high school basketball game, worked at the US Embassy (she met Bruce Lee!), my giggle-partner in crime AND she raised four kids!

My mother is second in that lineup. She immigrated to the US on her own as a teenager and didn't see her parents for 4 years. She's got a knack for exploring, navigating city transportation, being spontaneous and being a super fun grandmother. She is a breast cancer survivor and better yet a "Mom of teenagers" survivor!! 

She's pushed me, supported me, encouraged me, discouraged me, reprimanded me, praised me and flown across the world for me. She's been protective and demanding. She's been fun and loving. 

What I especially remember now as I raise three little humans myself - is her wishing she could take on my hearing loss herself. That she didn't want me to suffer. But she also knew that she couldn't take it on for me. So she walked beside me. She shuttled me to ENT, audiology and speech appointments. She’s learning ASL along with my kiddos. She has shown me how and she has also let me figure things out on my own. Because of this I am strong. I'm blessed to know that I have their foundation to fall back upon which makes me brave enough to climb that much higher. Thank you Ma!
