For #NEVERWORNS substack: the slingback from 1995 that changed the industry at the time I first saw an article on the Prada heel in the 1995 August issue of Vogue in marinarust’s “She’s Gotta Have It”. I love how Marina wrote about the shoe…such a longing…the absolute all-consuming DESIRE that she had for an object. As if this slingback was the answer to something. And then the whole entire QUEST Marina made to find the shoe…(you need to read the NEVERWORNS piece to get into it.) So, I called Marina up and she gave me the low-down. Fab. Then I was like…why is this nubby little slingback sold out? Ok, so the fall Prada 1995 collection CHANGED the industry. The glitzed ‘80s was waning and here we were having minimalism lunches at, like, Indochine. I don’t actually know this cause I wasn’t around, but this is what glo__b (Gloria Baume) a Vogue Senior Market Editor at the time relayed this to me in an interview. Prada was the thing. It redefined fashion. You can see this in a bunch of Bill Cunningham shot pieces for the Times at the time. I chatted with alinett (Andrea Linett) who was at Harper’s Bazaar told me that Vogue women were wearing this Prada look all the time. Those were the women making decisions about clothes…and keep in mind,..all there existed was legacy media at the time. We all got our info from one place. This was confirmed by Leslie Johnsen who headed up Prada PR from 1994 - 1997 who dished to me that Vogue editors would touch down in Milan and go straight to Prada to snap up the untaxed pieces. Then I spoke with laurietrott who gave me the low-down on how media worked with shoots and calling things in (NO BTS!, NO INFLUENCERS!) and anjattyson about how the BRICK AND MORTAR stores worked including customers looking at PHYSICAL lookbooks. A few takeaways here: media has certainly changed and we don’t wear heels as much anymore. I miss this sort of ache that comes with great clothes. Something that will make you call Milan and rack up a phone bill. And wait…really wait for the piece to drop. Thank you everyone who weighed in on this piece and every woman who took the time to chat with me. This was a joy to write. 👠
