This weekend we celebrated the life of the girl who changed everyone else’s.

The girl that I met on my first day of middle school. The girl who spoke to me because I was one of the few black girls in our first period class, pretty, and had nice hair. (She only has pretty friends 😉) She ended up living on the same street as me, she loved soccer as much as me, and we would walk home from school and soccer practice together every day we could. She opened me up socially and helped me through my shyness. She introduced me to Jack and Jill and my mom introduced her to Spelman College. 

When I moved to Texas, that could’ve been the end of our friendship, but that’s not how she rolls. Through the years of living in different states, times zones, and going to different top ranked HBCUs, I never questioned our friendship. Whenever we met up, no matter how much time had passed, nothing changed. She never stopped being my friend.

And then we ended up in the same city post-grad after being geographically apart since we were 14. Again, she introduced me to new people and formed a group that met weekly, and created bonds. She opened her door for anyone who exhibited the same traits as her and her group of friends. 

My social butterfly, I love you so much. I miss you so much. I feel like I lost a part of me, a family member, a sister. Every time I think about you, you are smiling and making sure everyone is “hydrated” 🍻 and having fun. I will never be the same and neither will every other soul you impacted during your 25 years of life. I promise to honor and celebrate you every day. I can’t thank you enough for being my friend.

I love you so much. Until we meet again.🦋
