Don't get us wrong, not all big-name brands are bad.

Whenever possible, we encourage everyone to buy local while they're traveling, but we know that's not always an option. It can be just as beneficial to choose big-named brands that have a demonstrated commitment to supporting local communities.

Look for companies with a corporate responsibility program, companies that consistently sponsor local events and nonprofits, that give their employees time to volunteer, that have a stance on sustainability and that make an effort to support programs that support the community.

Then, make sure they follow through.
