“You have been fooled by the Model Minority Myth. Let me break that down for you: in 1965 the United States government put into place a new immigration act that only allowed Asian immigrants in that had very high educational levels or special skills. And because of this, we were predetermined to be successful. And when we were, the media painted us as ‘model minorities,’ as good law abiding citizens that were the opposite of Black people. Remember, Black Americans were not introduced into the society on the base of education. They were brought in as slaves, as property. And then they were lynched and then segregated against and forced into ghettos and not given jobs and mass incarcerated against and they were criminalized for petty drug crimes and so much more. And these issues generationally affect their communities because it’s a part of the system. Yes, South [and East] Asians face ignorance, casual racism, and hate crime. But we have never in American history been systematically dehumanized and oppressed in the way Black people have. You gotta understand that white Americans intentionally gave us partial access to socioeconomic white privilege so they could say ‘Oh look the Asians did it so anybody can do it too’ and therefore deny the existence of structural racism against Black people. This country used us as a tool to divide People of Color to perpetuate White Supremacy. Wake up.” -Rishi Madnani (rish.dog)
