Travel Hacks: How to start living like a local, wherever you are.

Even with travel options opening back up around the world, you don't need to go far to start exploring sustainably. If the idea of finding locally-owned hidden gems in a new town, state or country feels overwhelming, take a few practice steps right outside your front door.

Here's how to get started:

Give yourself a timeline – an hour, 2 hours, 15 minutes, whatever it may be – and hit the road. No headphones. No agenda. No maps.

Pick a neighborhood at random and head into every shop or cafe you see whose name you don't instantly recognize. You don't have to spend money if you don't want to, but give yourself a chance to look around somewhere you may have passed a million times but never noticed before.

Talk to people, smile, say good morning. Ask how the place got started, who owns it, what their favorite thing on the menu or on the sales rack is right now.

It doesn't have to be intimidating, and it doesn't take much to get started. Because if you don't take the time and attention to find the hidden gems in your own hometown, imagine what you're missing out on during a once-in-a-lifetime trip in another part of the world.
