As we approach our annual day of giving on Maryland Day, March 25th, join us for a behind-the-scenes series connecting our collections and the dedicated staff who care for, interpret, and support them in so many ways.

"My name is Katie Caljean, President and CEO of the Maryland Center for History and Culture. One of the items in our vast Library collection that captures my historical imagination is the Declaration of Independence printed by Baltimore’s own Mary Katharine Goddard, first female postmaster of the United States. Although she is not a signer of the document, Goddard was an official printer to the Continental Congress, which had relocated to Baltimore in December 1776. The imprint at the bottom clearly identifies the city in which the document was printed and her full name: "Baltimore, in Maryland: Printed by Mary Katharine Goddard." A bold and brave move! 

Goddard was a trailblazer and occupied roles typically held by men during this period. It is empowering to think about her intrepid involvement during this pivotal moment in our nation’s nascent story. It also prompts me to contemplate the value of print newspapers, bulletins, and broadsides as a primary source of information during this period, and contrast with the way in which digital news stories are consumed today at such a rapid and voracious pace. As we approach 2026, and the 250th anniversary of the signing of our Declaration of Independence, objects like this one will enable us to ask new questions of the past to better illuminate our present and inform our future."
