✨Things that went well and learnings in my marathon build to @londonmarathon 2024✨

Things that went well:
• I rarely went 100% in training, this allowed me to recover, stay consistent and avoid risk of injury. I would do 1 track session on a Tuesday, 1 tempo session on a Friday and a long run on a Sunday. If my body didn’t feel ready to do a session I wasn’t afraid to push it to the next day. I would then push all my sessions a day meaning I didn’t necessarily work in 7 day cycles.

• Covered a wide variety of sessions in my training, paying attention to every intensity zone more than ever. ALOT of easy running and more speed work and steady long runs. I didn’t actually do much at marathon pace - @coachteamthie loves a minutes workout or cruise intervals, in my plan I regularly had my tempo run broken into smaller reps rather than long efforts. Large volume (up to an hour) of 1 -2 min on / off.

• I only did an 8 week marathon block. I built a big aerobic base before over Christmas which is necessary to sustain the increased level of training in the final 8 weeks. I did a lot of strength work with @itsmyphysioadrian and @iknowaphysio

🫠 Learnings:

• My busy life wasn’t suitable for 100 mile weeks. I could sustain this for a few weeks but I would drop off and have a menty b each and every time. My sweet spot is about 140km a week.

• I wouldn’t change this for anything but I said yes to every opportunity that came my way which got in the way of training a little!

• MORE MOBILITY needs to be done. I don’t engage so many of my muscles because of my awkward running style. Imagine how much more efficient I’d be if all muscles were firing! @movemeduk

Ultimately I know I have got more to give. Objectively my time wasn’t as competitive as I was running at last year. I didn’t put myself in a hole at London Marathon, I really wanted to enjoy it and that I did. If you take one thing away from this is that there is no one way to train for a marathon, no magic sessions to improve performance. Elite marathoners train just like amateurs - consistently training to build endurance with challenging but achievable training.
