The album was tompettyofficial’s first solo record, in which he later told RollingStone was “the most enjoyable record of my career.” 

When writing the record, Petty called it a true garage record and told Rolling Stone that “we [the band] actually had to pull the cars out at the start of the day. The sessions were relaxed and unhurried, and Petty credits Lynne, the former leader of ELO, for the upbeat atmosphere. “Jeff just loves to be in the studio,” he continued. “It’s like Disneyland to him: ‘All right, we’re making a record! Boy, what fun!’ And it rubbed off on me and Mike.”
