“And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, ‘Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?’ which means, ‘My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?’” -Mark 15:33-34

Good Friday seems like it may be misnamed, for it is the day that our Lord Jesus was brutally crucified, died, and buried. The darkest day in history, but not the end we could have known. It is called Good Friday because of what the crucifixion means. By dying on that cross, Jesus bore the sins of the world; he paid the price of rebelling against God. Out of his mighty love for you, for me, and for the rest of the world, Jesus sacrificed his own life. That three days later, Jesus would rise again, defeating sin and death, and making a way for us that we might have eternal life with the Father. When Jesus cried out, he bore and felt the separation from God that the sins of the world had done to everyone in the world. When Jesus says ‘My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?’, he is also referring to Psalm 22, which is a prayer of anguish but also victory. Yes, half of it is in deep despair and hopelessness, but David finishes it with praise to the LORD. It was a hard thing for Jesus to do, we know that he prayed in the garden of Gethsemane and was greatly distressed. Jesus knew what he had to do, and knew it would be a great burden: to suffer and die, but that it would lead to victory. Our own lives are indeed full of distress and suffering, and there is hope: those who have received the gift of Jesus’ sacrifice will have eternal life and fullness of joy. This weekend is the most important weekend of history, it is when the battle was won, that Jesus defeated sin and therefore made it possible for us to have salvation.
