“And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, ‘Take the staff, and assemble the congregation, you and Aaron your brother, and tell the rock before their eyes to yield its water. So you shall bring water out of the rock for them and give drink to the congfregation and their cattle.’” -Numbers 20:7-8

Story time: I went backpacking in Shenadoah National Park and was close to running out of water on the top of a mountain. There were no streams or creeks around and I would have to ration my little water between hiking, cooking dinner, and hiking the next day. I prayed to God asking for him to lead me to streams, that one would be near enough to the trail that I could resupply. A while later, despite passing bone dry rocks and landscapes, I came across water literally coming out of a rock. So thank you God for this miracle and answer to prayer!

What’s the one thing we all often struggle with when it comes to our relationship with God? Listening and being obedient. This is not a unique struggle, you are not alone. I struggle with this, your pastor struggles with this, even Moses struggled here. Moses was great in bringing every issue to God, all the times Israel disobeyed God, questioned him, Moses went to God for guidance. However, in this story in Numbers, Moses did not listen to God’s instructions and instead of telling the rock to release water, he struck the rock with his staff as he did in Exodus 17. This is not what God told him to do, but water still came out. God recognizes the needs of his people and will meet them. God will also use broken people to do his will. Moses wasn’t perfect, as evidenced, and yet God used him abundantly.
