I always enjoy the goalie chats with my friend and Pens Elite Goalie Development Director goaliedocmitch . Today, we were discussing the save Shesterkin made last night on the back door attempt. Mitch commented how it was refreshing to see him angle back but not necessarily right to and on the post. 

It is paramount to target the receiving stick blade and it is important to realize that just driving to the post may inhibit your movement and create space.

Videos two and three are clips I like to use in classroom sessions with our clients and students. Clip number two is a tying goal last year for Florida against  the Bruins. If you notice, Swayman had a great beat on the puck, but as he pushes back, you will notice as soon as his skate hits the post, it stops his right hip from coming through on the save. That creates a large enough opening where the puck gets through. Clip number three is of Carey Price, who I considered a master of edge work and net awareness. You’ll notice as he slides over, his right foot slightly goes past the post into an overlap, but he masterfully catches his edge, allows the puck to come into his body and seals up. Continually working on your edges and a strong awareness of your net coverage allows you to be more fluid in your movements and empowers you to control the game more. As coaches, having regular conversations with your fellow coaches and your goaltenders enhances your perspective and allows you to see the game on a more informed scale.
