The Australian Golf Club was founded in 1882, the inaugural Australian open was held at the Australian Golf Club in 1904 and has hosted the Australian Open 21 times, it is the oldest golf club to still exist in Australia. In 1903 the Australian Golf Club moved to its present location in Kensington where Dr. Alister MacKenzie updated it. The US Armed Forces commandeered the clubhouse during the early war years in the 1940s. American Red Cross requisitioned it in 1944, then in 1982 fire razed the club house burning it down. Now there is a beautiful club house with panoramic views. Sloan Morpeth engineered a redesign in 1987. Then came the era of the Golden Bear, Jack Nicklaus. Nicklaus won the Australian Open in 1975, 76 and 78. Long time member of the Australian Golf Club and sport media mogul Kerri Packer decided it was time for a tougher and more engaging course. Packer hired Nicklaus to redesign the course, it took until 1980 to complete the course and is still one of the toughest courses in Australia.
