Did you know that New York City is home to the largest Chinese American population in the United States? Luckily, The Mott Girls, two Chinese American females, are working hard to keep that legacy alive. This women-led tour group based in the heart of Chinatown showcases 150 years of Chinese American culture through walking and food tours around the historic neighborhood.

For founders cloclonutz and annah5030, the tours are a way to share all of the Chinese American history they learned as adults (which they notably didn’t get the chance to learn as young students in US public schools). Their work became exceedingly crucial as anti-Asian sentiment dramatically rose during and after the pandemic, leaving Chinatown’s small businesses with devastating effects.

Ahead of Mott Street Girls’ summer programming relaunching on May 26th, staff writer izbaskette went on a private group tour which allowed her to get a first-hand experience of the excursion with stops at Chinatown’s Chatham Square, Mosco Street’s Fried Dumpling restaurant, the neighborhood’s oldest store, it’s first woman-owned bookstore, and more.

To read more about the founders, their mission, the story behind their name, and how to join their next tour, tap the link in our bio. What’s your favorite spot to visit in NYC’s Chinatown?
