Watching bits of the funeral yesterday took me back to my own experiences at St. George’s Chapel, albeit the one in Rhode Island.
.
When I attended in the late 90’s we had a mandatory chapel once a week and I remember sitting in the pews facing each other and the dynamic it created.
.
In a quick search of why churches were built with this design, one reason is that it allows for the priest to stand in the center of the aisle, closer to the forward-facing seating at the back of the church. Another thought is that it allowed the choir and upper members of the church and congregation who occupied the inward pews to keep track of each other.
.
I can see myself sitting in chapel when I first got to school, feeling completely out of place, looking up at the glorious stained glass windows, vaulted ceiling, light blue and gold embroidered lampas valances that adorned the walls and looking down at my hands. Trying to listen to the priest and doing everything in my power to avoid accidentally locking eyes with one of my new peers across the aisle.
.
The following years I would enter the same chapel with my friends, size up the newbies and occasionally try to catch their eyes and offer a reassuring smile, while they sat squirming in their seats, staring at the ceiling.
