May is “Military Appreciation Month” in the USA.  We couldn’t think of anything more important during this time than discussing the rising epidemic of mental health issues and suicide amongst active military and veterans. We reached out for information from The Headstong Project getheadstrong a national non-profit serving in Idaho whose mission is to provide active-duty military service members and veterans with no-cost mental health services and resources as they deal with trauma. On theboisebubble we speak with Dr. Amy Williams - Chief Clinical Officer at The Headstong Project and tony.j.liles a Meridian Idaho resident, veteran and mental health advocate. Dr. Williams sheds light perspective on the significance of the current situation. Tony is helping connect other veterans with the group to take advantage of their services. Both are trying to remove the stigma surrounding talking about mental health issues in the military, specifically trauma, and normalize speaking about it openly and getting help when it’s needed. 

We discuss the varying forms of trauma, what PTSD looks like, how to spot signs of PTSD, how to find help, and specifically what resources and support are provided by The Headstrong Project. It’s a very vulnerable, honest, emotional, and needed conversation and we were honored to have it.

There is a mental health crisis across the country among those who have served our country, and they deserve acceptance and support from the other members of a grateful nation.
