It’s time to celebrate the #RUClassOf2022 as they transition to their next chapter! Over the next few weeks, we will share stories from our soon-to-be graduates about how their time at Rutgers has shaped them into who they are today.

Meet Jenika Scott, a graduating senior at @rutgersartsandsciences majoring in Political Science.

“I came to Rutgers in September 2019 after living my entire life in Guyana. I am a first-generation and a non-traditional student. Time was not on my side, but I thought I knew who I was and where I was going in life. When I got to Rutgers, my plan was to attend class, do well, and graduate. My mantra became, ‘Don't ruffle any feathers, do not speak too loudly, and color within the lines.’ This came naturally to me as I am an introvert. I never imagined that my character and personality would do a complete 360.

While at a leadership retreat, it hit me that finding my why has been a recurring theme throughout my time at Rutgers. I thought, ‘Who am I? Why Rutgers? Why me specifically? What is my Mark?’ Since then, I have pushed myself to answer these questions and, as a result, gained so many experiences from various programs that I have attended, organizations I have participated in, and I have met great mentors, friends, and people along the way. These experiences have shaped and molded my character, making me believe in who I am, what I want to achieve in this world, and my why.

As a result, I no longer color within the lines. I can now speak in front of crowds, facilitate workshops, design programs, and teach classes. I have done research, presented at conferences, and am now a Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority sister. However, my greatest reward is being a mentor to others. I genuinely believe that the person I am now is the best version of myself, and it is all thanks to Rutgers.

‘There are those who look at things the way they are and ask why…I dream of things that never were and ask why not?’ I am an innovator!”

Check back each week as we feature #RUClassOf2022 graduates.
