For #WomensHistoryMonth, we have had conversations with many women of the Rutgers community about the legacy they are currently building. Meet Samantha Lee, Co-President of Women in Computer Science.

"As many have, I come from an environment where there were only a handful of women in my STEM classes, and the lack of gender parity in the lecture halls of my freshman year was nothing new. What struck me was the difference in scale. Rutgers is huge, and it’s easy to get lost in the crowd, let alone a whole campus. I made it a mission to have my voice heard despite gender-based barriers, and, to my delight, it was. I was lucky to have found communities of like-minded students who cared about matters close to my heart: gender equality, minority representation, data for good. I had a space where I was comfortable, saw people like me, and could be myself.

My peers soon became my biggest inspiration. As we celebrated the advancements and privileges we enjoyed at Rutgers, I saw that their ambitions were rooted in brighter futures. If I leave a legacy, I'll be overjoyed if it's half as impressive as that of my classmates, who work tirelessly to advocate for intersectional justice, organize global issues, demand accountability from all Rutgers leaders, and more. They've taught me that it is not enough to be heard – we must be listened to, acknowledged, and valued. Being a part of a community does not immediately translate into progress; instead, every cause has an actionable takeaway, and being present in these spaces is only the first step.

Influenced by my peers, I now seek the 'next step' of every matter I care about and have been fortunate to work on collaborative initiatives that increase funding toward women in computing, promote K-12 STEM education, facilitate workshops on tech ethics, and more. As I approach graduation, I am just as excited to see these projects grow as I am to pass them down to those who are as ambitious as my peers – my friends. In the meantime, I hope to make my present and future communities proud."

Check back each week as we feature women of the Rutgers community throughout #WomensHistoryMonth.
