For #BlackHistoryMonth, we spent time asking members of the Rutgers community how they plan to make history. Meet Elijah Pitt Goodson, entrepreneur.

“To affect change within this world you must be of your community and serve your community. The power of art within the black community is what shapes the world as we see it today. I am a BrownMill Man, a leader within all aspects of my life, and I plan to make history by fulfilling my Kingdom Purpose.

I am a senior here at Rutgers Newark and a full-time team member of BrownMill company. We are a lifestyle, sustainable clothing brand that focuses on hand-crafted and engineered quality garments. We pride ourselves in our community engagement, hoping to inspire those around us and those to follow in our steps. One of our most notable quotes that we use to tag all our garments is a daily reminder to keep us thinking bigger. “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots” - Marcus Garvey. I am a storyteller, community leader and entrepreneur.

Walking within the steps of my grandfather (John Brown Pitt, Jr) that he left behind and carrying the wisdom of my Mother and Grandmother is how I stay focused on my journey. The name “BrownMill” is derived from my Grandparent’s names. A further example of what it means to know the power that your roots and ancestors hold. Our people need black leaders, and I am proud to say that I am one;

A BrownMill Man.”

Check back each week as we feature members of the Rutgers community throughout #BlackHistoryMonth.
