For #BlackHistoryMonth, we spent time asking members of the Rutgers community how they plan to make history. Meet Grace Blay, licensed esthetician and marketer.

“My love for the beauty industry began when I was in middle school struggling with acne. I would go to dermatologists only to be prescribed products that often burned my face. I would turn to DIYs and old wives’ tales that cause more harm than good and could rarely find information that considered how my skin tone may present skin disorders and diseases or how it may accept certain ingredients. The industry has come a long way but there is still a high demand for women of color to join.

When I began at Rutgers, I wanted to be a dermatologist. After my first semester, I realized that medicine truly wasn’t a passion of mine. 3 semesters, 3 internships, and 2 major changes later I found communication. This major allows me to work in marketing making a difference in how we are represented in media, and in August of 2020, I decided to enroll in beauty school to get my license as an esthetician to take my education of skin to a new level.

I hope to make history by educating people on how skin disorders and diseases show up in people of color while also teaching them how to properly care for them. I aspire to push diversity in media and have more representation.

Proverbs 16:9 says, “We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.” I planned to be a dermatologist but through faith, I get to work with skin and have an even greater impact than I thought I could. As God has ordered my steps, I hope my story inspires others to walk by faith and trust that God has the plans for us and in the end, it will work out.”

Check back each week as we feature members of the Rutgers community throughout #BlackHistoryMonth.
